Welcome 2008

01 Jan 2008 01:06 pm

We welcome this New Year with great expectations for the Promise Land Community Club. Unfortunately, we had to end 2007 on a sad note, as we offer condolences to Board member, Lillian Cobb.

Lillian's husband, Edsel passed away on December 26th, after suffering a heart attack a few days earlier. We all remember Edsel, a mild mannered, and amiable gentlemen who accompanied Lillian to the Board meeting last April, as well as many times before to Tennessee and to other gatherings of the Promise Land Community descendants. We will miss him greatly. Our heart felt condolences goes out to Lillian, their son, Eric and daughter, Linda. May God strengthen and give them comfort during this season of grief and bereavement.

As we move forward into 2008, please look to forward to receiving your copy of the Promise Land Newsletter. If you do not receive one, please let us know. All members in good standing (i.e. current dues are paid) should receive a newsletter.

Please put these dates on your calendar for 2008:

PLCC Becomes A Tax Exempt Organization

04 Dec 2007 12:56 pm

It is with great pleasure that I announce that the Promise Land Community Club has received a tax exempt 501 c (3) status from the Internal Revenue Service effective July 28, 2007. This endeavor is the results of work of Board Member, Bernice Heard who led us to the services of Marshall Tabb, CPA, who helped us through the maze of paperwork required by the IRS. As a tax exempt organization we will receive a significant savings in taxes as we make large purchases in our efforts to renovate and restore the school building and other projects. But, more importantly, our financial supporters can now receive a deduction when making donations to the PLCC. So please, make sure that you, your family and friends take advantage of this opportunity by making a tax deductible contribution to the Promise Land Community Club, before filing taxes for 2007.

Crying Sad Note: The Promise Land Community Club is saddened by the loss of another faithful member, James Franklin Primm. James the son of William and Tamar Primm, was born and raised in the Promise Land Community. He attended Promise Land School and graduated Hampton High School in Dickson. He served in the US Army and settled in Nashville, TN. He passed on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2007. He leaves to mourn his loss, to sons, Keith and Quinton; four brothers, Henry, Micheal, Jerry and Lemuel and their spouses; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was funeralized at the Taylor Funeral Home in Dickson on November 28th and laid to rest at the Nesbitt Cemetery in Promise Land.

Wishing everyone a joyous and blessed holiday season,
Serina Kay

First Youth Rally A Resounding Success

28 Sep 2007 02:59 pm

Very Happy The first youth rally, sponsored by the Promise Land Club was resoundingly successful by all accounts. The rally entitled, "Back-T--School, Stand-up, Speak-up and Sing-out for Jesus" was held on September 16, 2007 at the James and Mary Edmondson Park at 3:00 p.m. The program M.C. was none other than our Board Chair, Sokoto Fulani, who along with his wife Beesigye delighted those in the community when they arrived to take part in the program. There were song selections by the New Christian Fellowship Children's Choir, Stone Chapel UMC and the Greater Faith Fellowship Church Youth Choirs. The Word of Life Youth Ministry delighted the crowd with a step show and praise dance, however the highlight of the event were our youth speakers including 2007 PLHA recipient, Jasmine Darden, DarMarcus Corlew and Brensie Thompson. Mechelle Washington, 2006 PLHA served as an event planner and hostess.

After the program, the participants and attendees were treated to soft drinks and grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, made possible by Murphy Cee Bee Store in Charlotte, The New Christian Fellowship Sanctuary, and Members of the Promise Land Community Club. All the youth in attendance received back-to-school supplies.
Based on the suggestions from those who attended, this event will be held again next year.

The membership of the PLCC is growing, but it has not reached the goal set at the annual Board Meeting in April this year. Our goal was to double the 2006 membership of 35. As of today we have 59 members signed up with only11 more to go in order to meet our goal. Anyone reading this and who is not a member, obviously have an interest in the PLCC. So we urge you to join us today by submitting your membership dues of $25. Please click on Club Info for details on submitting your membership dues. If you are already a paid member, please encourage your family and friends to also join us.

Membership will help to keep our organization to grow strong and enable us to meet our goals and objectives.

Peace, Love, and Unity
Serina Very Happy

The Community Grieves The Loss of A Queen

30 Aug 2007 01:07 pm

We are saddened by the loss of Mrs. Betty Ruth Edmondson, one of the two remaining life time residents of Promise Land. Aunt Betty Ruth, succumbs to death after a long illness. She died peacefully in her home on Wednesday, August 29th. Diagnosed with leukemia in January and enduring a lengthy hospitalization and rehabilitation, she was blessed to be able to regain some reasonable abilities which enabled her to return to some of her usual activities such as living somewhat independently, going to church and receiving visitors at home. In March, her children gave her a spectacular 80th birthday party at her home. It was attended by many family and friends.

Aunt Betty Ruth was truly one of the pillars of this community. If my mother is the Mayor (as she is often referred), Aunt Betty Ruth was the Comptroller and Magistrate. For years she served as the Treasurer for the St. John Promise Land Church. She took this responsibility very seriously and prudently oversaw and managed the budgetary operations of the church. She also took on the reponsibility of maintaining the upkeep of the church and school buildings. When she was able she would clean these buildings herself. Living on Promise Land Road, she advocated for signs to be posted to curtail speeding along this stretch of highway. At her urging, a "Slow Down Church Zone" sign was posted just up the road from the school house. Last year a 30 mile speed limit was posted.

She was also the song leader at St. John. Her renditions of her favorite songs, "I Am So Glad I'm Here", "This Little Light of Mine" and "I Am On The Battlefield", will be greatly missed. When she sang these songs you got the feeling that she was actually living the songs she sang.

She will be greatly missed by our community as well as by her friends and relatives throughout Dickson County. Moreover, we sympathize with her children, Mickey (Jewel), Jimmy (James), Sharon, Brock, and Bobby, and their spouses and children. She leaves a host of grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, nieces, nephews, a sister, brother, and many cousins. Also, she leaves behind a devoted aunt, Dorothy Edmondson, a long time friend and companion, Donald Corlew and also her compatriot and sister-n-law, Essie Gilbert

Aunt Betty Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, James Edmondson, and by her daughter, Hattie Ruth and son Thomas.

At this time furneral arrangements are not complete.

With Great Sadness, Crying
Kay
